Still searching for the right words

How do you explain the story of the media screwup last night regarding the deaths of 13 West Virginia miners? The criticism seems to be focusing on the mining company itself. I am not saying they deserve no blame. But the media has to take their fair-share.

Rule number one of journalism 101 was broken by not verifying the story. Almost every one of us in this business has probably been guilty of it a time or two. But this is different than screwing up a story on city hall politics.

In the weeks after Hurricane Katrina we learned numerous stories told to us were not true. And now this...

I would rather be last with the story & get it right, than first with the story & get it wrong.
